Emotions are a key part of what makes us human, but people vary in the extent and impact of these emotions and some individuals have debilitating emotional problems such as depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and borderline personality disorder. While psychological treatments are often the first choice in helping people overcome these difficulties, these treatments do not work for everyone and need improving.
Emotional reactions occur in response to our thoughts, which in turn are the result of cognitive processes (e.g. attention and interpretation). Our research is designed to improve our understanding of how cognitive processes combine to perpetuate emotional problems and identify key targets for new psychological treatments. This work is paving the way for improved psychological treatments.
In this study, we are using new computerised tasks to try and change unhelpful habits of thought (worry and rumination) in people with anxiety and depression. If you would like to read more about this study, please click here.
